Dr. Gayle Atlas is an osteopathic physician who trained as an anesthesiologist at Nassau County Medical Center, a Level III Trauma Center. She perfected her skills caring for high-risk OR and obstetric patients. The Burn Unit at NCMC was where Dr. Atlas began administering deep and moderate sedation to patients who needed analgesia away from the operating room. The trend away from the OR began to blossom in the 1990s. Sedation could be given efficiently, safely and at lower costs in remote areas of the hospital. Dr. Atlas sedated children for bone marrow biopsies in the ICU. She medicated neonates, children and adults during MRI. She gave orthopedic patients Total IV Sedation (TIVA) in the ER. And she continued to care for severely injured patients on the Burn Unit rather than the OR. After 12 years or service as an attending physician at NCMC, Dr. Atlas brought her skills to Office Based Anesthesia in a JACHO approved office on Park Avenue.
Seven years and 10,000 procedures later, Dr. Atlas continues to work diligently to expand the availability of TIVA for Office Based Anesthesia. OBA saves patients an ambulatory admission, and saves third party payers significant reimbursements as the efficiency and safety of office treatment continues to grow.
Gayle Atlas is a diplomate of the American Board of Anesthesiology since 1994. She is the mother of two sons, Craig and Brett. She is a beginner oenophile who relaxes as an expert cook and Sudoku aficionado.
